Why profit is not the same as cash

A profitable month can still leave the bank account under pressure.

Read the timing, not just the total

Revenue can be recognised before a customer pays. Inventory may be purchased before it is sold. Loan principal and equipment purchases consume cash without being ordinary operating expenses in the same period. Depreciation reduces profit without a current cash payment.

Build a bridge

Start with the reported result, then reconcile non-cash items, changes in receivables, inventory and payables, tax, financing and investment cash flows. Keep operating, investing and financing movements separate. A bank balance is a point in time; a cash-flow statement explains movement over a period.

Ask management

Which profitable sales remain unpaid? Are stock purchases building faster than sales? Are tax or debt payments concentrated in a few weeks? Compare invoice-level evidence with the collection assumptions in the cash forecast.

Next action

Review the largest cash movements, give overdue collections an owner and update a rolling forecast. A temporary collection delay and a recurring cash-loss pattern require different responses.
