Start with the decision, not the title
A full-time CFO is an internal leadership role with continuous ownership. A virtual CFO is an external or part-time support model that provides an agreed level of finance leadership without the same fixed hiring commitment.
Neither is automatically better. The useful question is whether the model can produce a trusted decision at the pace the business requires.
Where a virtual CFO may fit
A virtual CFO can suit an SME that needs recurring management reporting, cash-flow planning, working-capital attention or funding preparation but does not yet need a dedicated internal CFO every day.
- Flexible scope around a defined business question.
- Access to CFO-level analysis without a full-time headcount commitment.
- Useful when the internal team can provide data and own operating actions.
Where a full-time CFO may fit
A full-time CFO may be appropriate when the business has a complex finance team, frequent capital or stakeholder decisions, a broad control agenda or a need for continuous internal ownership across finance, strategy and execution.
- Dedicated day-to-day leadership and accountability.
- Continuous context across the organisation and finance team.
- More capacity for complex systems, controls, capital and stakeholder work.
Questions to ask before choosing
What decision is currently blocked? How reliable is the data? Who will own the actions? Is the need weekly, monthly or continuous? What should remain with the accountant, finance team or business owner?
