FRACTIONAL CFO

When should a growing business hire a fractional CFO?

Growth often creates finance leadership needs before a business is ready for a full-time CFO team.

Look for decision pressure

A fractional CFO may be useful when the business is making more complex decisions but the existing finance routine is still focused mainly on recording transactions and closing the books.

The signal is not a particular revenue number. It is the growing cost of unclear information, delayed decisions, weak forecasts or finance work that has no clear owner.

Common signals

  • Management cannot agree on a reliable monthly view of performance.
  • Cash shortfalls or funding needs are being discovered too late.
  • Growth plans, hiring, pricing or capex decisions lack a financial model.
  • Investors, lenders or boards need clearer forecasts and explanations.
  • The finance team needs process ownership, definitions and a better reporting cadence.

What a fractional CFO can build

The first workstream may be a monthly management pack, a 13-week cash forecast, a driver-based plan, a working-capital review, a lender-readiness checklist or a finance process improvement plan.

Fractional does not mean passive

The business still needs an internal owner for data, context and action. The fractional CFO provides structure, challenge and finance leadership; management remains responsible for decisions and execution.
